Sublime – 1) noble, exalted 2) inspiring awe or admiration
That is the definition of the word Sublime in Webster’s New World dictionary. Those are definitely words that describe the band Sublime, but is that why they named their band? I believe that sort of self indulgence wasn’t a part of the bands attitude but I could be mistaken.
There are other beliefs on the meaning of the word. Some say it means a state of ecstasy or even an adjective to describe a heavenly place. The phrase exalted could mean to lift up or raise.
Scientifically its meaning is to cause to pass directly from the solid to the vapor state and condense back to solid form. Or it can be to condense into crystal or powder form, and also to purify.
The word subliminal means below the threshold of consciousness, which is something the late Brad Nowell would be familiar with. But what is the true origin of the band’s name?
There are so many definitions of the actual word sublime and I’m really curious to know what you guys think is the meaning of the band’s name. So please comment below and let me know what you think.
In the mean time check out the new video of me playing “Badfish.”
Scientifically speaking “sublime” defies the rules of science so maybe the band is defying the rules of music.
